Red-Haired Mummy Found in New Mexico

A Forgotten Enigma from the Desert Southwest

What if one of America’s most unusual mummified discoveries wasn’t found in Egypt or Peru, but right here in New Mexico?

In the early 1900s, a hunter named John Tex was exploring the sandstone cliffs of Socorro County when he stumbled upon a sealed chamber hidden beneath hardened layers of clay. Inside were three distinct levels of clay cement, and within them lay a remarkable find — the naturally mummified remains of a red-haired individual.

The story first surfaced in the Albuquerque Daily Citizen on March 30, 1903, where reports described the reddish hair and exceptional preservation that puzzled early researchers. Some believed the natural mineral content in the surrounding clay had created a perfect environment for preservation, while others speculated that the discovery hinted at an unknown prehistoric people.

This find echoed similar reports from Grand Gulch, Utah, where explorers uncovered red-haired mummies beneath ancient cliff dwellings — raising questions about whether a mysterious group of people once spread across parts of the American Southwest.

The enigma deepens when viewed against the global record. Across the world, from the Tarim Basin of China to the Paracas Peninsula of Peru, and even in ancient Egyptian tombs, archaeologists have uncovered naturally preserved individuals with red or blond hair. Could these patterns suggest ancient migrations, shared cultural practices, or simply remarkable coincidences linked by geography and climate?

Adding another layer to the mystery, Socorro County later became the setting of the famous Socorro UFO incident of 1964—a reminder that the region continues to attract stories that straddle the boundary between science and the unexplained.

This rediscovered 1903 report invites us to revisit old questions with modern eyes: Who were these people? Where did they come from? And what other forgotten chapters of prehistory might still lie hidden beneath the desert sands of the Southwest?

Watch the full story and explore how discoveries like these connect America’s desert mummies to global patterns of ancient burial and preservation.
