Pueblo Grande: Nevada's Lost City of Giants

In the early 1900s, archaeologists digging in Nevada's Muddy and Virgin River valleys stumbled onto what newspapers hailed as the Western Hemisphere's largest prehistoric ruin—Pueblo Grande, a sprawling "lost city" near St. Thomas.

Under the direction of M.R. Harrington from the Museum of the American Indian and Heye Foundation, teams spent months excavating this massive complex: eight miles wide in places, stretching intermittently 35 miles along ancient river courses. What emerged challenged ideas of ancient desert life—sturdy round adobe buildings up to 20 rooms each, with hard-glazed floors circling central courtyards.

Beneath the ruins lay the graves of this vanished people, their skeletons averaging over seven feet tall—a physically dominant race towering over later inhabitants. One poignant burial held a woman wrapped in feathers beside newborn twins, near what seemed a sacrificial altar or ceremonial hearth, from which walkways radiated outward.

The finds revealed a layered society. Beautiful shell jewelry, intricately carved beads, and vividly painted pottery sat alongside basic hunting tools, showing artistic flair amid survival needs. Clay urns cradled perfectly formed dice—some with rounded edges—suggesting a passion for gaming. Deepest strata held the crudest artifacts, while upper levels grew refined, marking centuries of cultural evolution.

Social divides stood clear: elite "giant" burials brimmed with treasures, far outshining common graves and hinting at hierarchies or chieftains. Tool variations sparked talk of overlapping settlements or outside influences, with later Pueblo and Piute traces implying these giants faded into known tribes.

Harrington pressed on, determined to unravel Pueblo Grande's full story—a prehistoric metropolis of titans thriving in harsh Nevada sands. Adapted from International News Service reports, March 5 (early 1920s).
